Beer, water and home-brew are the traditional beverages for buffets in Finland, but these days, you will also often find red and white wine being served. As a variety of different dishes are on offer, the wines and beers should go well with as many flavours as possible.

Casseroles are usually rich in flavour yet quite smooth due to their long cooking times. A similarly rich and smooth beverage will therefore work well with them. If your food is very fatty, you can cut it with a well-balanced beverage.

Blinis are best accompanied by crisp wines with enough acidity to cut the fattiness of the food. Although your beer can also be light and fresh, malty beers also complement the buckwheat in blinis.

Fatty fish often has more flavour than leaner species, so the beverages you choose to accompany them can also be more full-bodied.
